CARROLLTON, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Two high school football players are now behind bars for allegedly shooting and killing 46-year-old Tyrone Boykin on Friday.
“Tyrone was a good guy. He just helped me move to my new salon. You call him he’s right there,” said Jacqulene Bridges, family friend.
Bridges serves on the Carrollton City Council and said she met Tyrone and the Boykin family when she was homeless.
“We’re going to miss him because he was our go to person. I seen Tyrone grow up from his past. I seen him grow up to be an upstanding young man in this community so we can see him raise his children,” said Bridges.
Carrollton police said he was shot and killed near his home on Magnolia Street on Friday. They arrested 18-year-old Kimauri Farmer, and 17-year-old Joshawia Davis. Farmer played football for Carrollton High School. Davis played for Bowdon High School.
According to 247Sports, Farmer is committed to play football for Liberty University.
A third person, a 15-year-old was also taken into custody. All three face a single count of murder.
“We gotta pray for the school system. Everybody is impacted and hurt by this in our community.” said Bridges.
Police have not revealed what led up to the shooting, but witnesses say there was some kind of shootout in the road at some point.
In a statement, the Carrollton City Schools superintendent said:
We have been made aware that one of our students has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred off campus during summer break. We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of life and recognize the pain this causes across our community.
“This is a deeply troubling situation,” said Dr. Mark Albertus, Superintendent of Carrollton City Schools. “Any time a young person is involved in a tragedy like this, whether as a victim or as someone charged with causing harm, it affects all of us. Our thoughts are with the family of the individual who lost their life, as well as with our school community as we work to process this difficult news.”
The District said it is fully cooperating with the investigation.
“It takes a village, and you have to do it with love in spite of your circumstances. That’s what we’re going to do here in the city of Carrollton as we lead this community through this tragedy,” said Bridges.
