The 76ers faced an almost impossible decision at third overall in the NBA Draft, one which will shape the direction of their franchise.
Should they take Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe, a defense-first guard with tantalizing potential?
Or would it be Ace Bailey, the uber-athletic forward who refused to conduct a pre-draft workout with the team?
Just over a week after the Sixers selected him third overall, fans will get their first look at Edgecombe.
The twist? It will come against a new villain for the fan base: Bailey.
Edgecombe and the 76ers will take on Bailey and the Utah Jazz on July 5 in Salt Lake City, Utah, as they kick off their Summer League schedule.
What is the NBA Summer League?
The NBA Summer League is an event that occurs during the basketball offseason, in which NBA teams look to learn more about their young talent.
Each team constructs a Summer League roster, built up with rookies and developmental talent from their “G-League” teams (essentially the minor leagues).
The NBA offers three tournaments for these Summer League teams to play in: the California Classic in San Francisco, the Salt Lake City Classic and the main Las Vegas Summer League. All 30 teams play at the tournament in Las Vegas, while the other two tournaments are optional.
Who is playing for the 76ers in the NBA Summer League?
Edgecombe will be the star attraction for the 76ers, as he is expected to play July 5.
Multiple key young players will also be playing for Philadelphia. Key bench players from a year ago, Justin Edwards and Adem Bona, will play for the team.
This year’s second-round pick from Auburn, Johni Broome, will also play.
