Alabama football WR Jalen Hale practices before ReliaQuest Bowl

Alabama football practice for the ReliaQuest Bowl featured a familiar face at wide receiver. Jalen Hale was running routes during the practice time reporters were allowed to observe in Tampa on Friday.

Hale’s season ended before it began, with a severe left leg injury during spring practice. He had returned to practice in some capacity before the bowl, but the observation window was the first time reporters saw him.

Kalen DeBoer said before the Crimson Tide traveled to Tampa that Hale was progressing, but remained sidelined for Tuesday’s game.

“I don’t anticipate you seeing him in the bowl, but he’s been out there,” DeBoer said. “We were excited, it must have been a week or two ago, running around and doing some things. Again, not any type of full contact yet at that point, but just was fun to see his body out there running around and he brings a smile to his face and I know he was enjoying that moment, getting out there, just working through the process and progressing along.”

Hale was dressed out, but wearing a black jersey, which signals a non-contact participant in practice. He caught several passes during the observation periods.

The sophomore joined the Crimson Tide in the 2023 class, and finished his first year in Tuscaloosa with five catches for 148 yards and a touchdown. He was a four-star prospect coming out of high school.

Alabama is thin at wide receiver for the Michigan game. The Crimson Tide had several contributors hit the transfer portal at that position, including Kobe Prentice, Kendrick Law, Caleb Odom and Emmanuel Henderson.

Coupled with some injuries at receiver, Alabama will be down to four scholarship players at wideout for the bowl. Those include Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard, Rico Scott and Jaren Hamilton.

However, the group looked to have added a face for the Michigan game. Jaylen Mbakwe was practicing with the groups, wearing No. 6 in white, signifying him as an offensive player.

Alabama and Michigan are scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT Tuesday at Raymond James Stadium. The game will be aired on ESPN.
