LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Red Raider fan base is known for showing up in big numbers when Tech plays, and many local businesses see the benefit.
Danny Jackson, Director of Operations at Golf Suites, says the atmosphere on game day is like no other.
“Thunderous, defining, large crowds of people dressed up, people camping out to get on booths and tables ahead of tabs, starting tabs and getting ready for a good time,” Jackson said.
Eric Washington, General Manager at Two Docs, says all of the business and foot traffic contributes to the local economy.
“With the football team making the bowl game it’s just extending the season, and it’s more excitement for athletics and fans and alumni from the community coming out to watch the game and support the team,” Washington said.
“It’s always a great time for our business and a lot of business around Lubbock to boost the economy even more through the support of the university and the athletics program.”
Jackson says he could immediately see how important the Red Raiders are to Lubbock, as soon as he arrived.
“When I first moved here, going out to dinner – didn’t matter where I was going to, everyone was sitting at their table, but they had their backs turned and they were watching the TVs, barely paying attention to their conversations, wanting to see what was going on,” Jackson said.
These local businesses say they need community support to survive.
“Small businesses are always working hard to provide great customer services and unique experiences specific to their area,” Washington said.
“Every time a customer chooses to support a local business, it really goes a long way to making sure we can stay in business, and we can continue doing what we are doing and give back to our community when we can.”
