The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder from Carrollton, Georgia chose the Wolverines over Penn State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Colorado and Georgia Tech. He took official visits to all of those schools before deciding to play football in Ann Arbor.
Barney earned his offer from the Wolverines in May 2024 from defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan. Since then, he has visited Ann Arbor on a few occasions, including for the spring game this year and his official visit the weekend of June 20. Even before official visit season began, the Wolverines were the No. 1 school for Barney.
“Just seeing the players compete in the spring game (stood out to me),” Barney told The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich ($) back in April. “I thought the defense did good on both sides, but it was a defensive game at first. Coach (LaMar) Morgan, I could tell he coaches hard, but loves you harder, and that’s a type of coach I would like to play for.
“They are still at the top of my list.”
Now with Barney locked in, Michigan has 20 commitments in its 2026 class, which ranks No. 7 overall on 247Sports’ composite. Barney is the second member of the secondary to commit to the Wolverines, joining four-star cornerback Andre Clarke.
Barney is ranked No. 19 in the state of Georgia, No. 14 at the cornerback position and No. 148 overall in the 2026 class, per 247Sports’ composite. As a junior in 2024, Barney compiled four interceptions, four pass deflections, one forced fumble and a whole lot of tackles, which you can see in his junior year highlights below.
