Tragedy as British woman, 35, is run down and killed in front of her husband while out jogging in France as cops question driver

A British tourist has tragically been killed after she was run down while out for a jog with her husband.

The 35-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, was running on Avenue Charles-de-Gaulle in Beaune, a small town in eastern France, on Tuesday morning when a car hit her.

After the collision at around 8am local time, paramedics who arrived 15 minutes later found she was in cardiac arrest.

Tragically, she could not be resuscitated and died at the scene.

The driver, a 45-year-old local, was taken into custody by police, who are currently investigating the incident.

The British woman’s husband, who was reportedly in shock but physically unharmed, was treated by firefighters.

Last year, a British motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a car while on a bike tour in France with his friends

The 49-year-old victim, who was not named at the time, was riding alongside his two compatriots through the commune of Gael, 30 miles west of Rennes, when a French driver, 52, pulled out into the road.

Two bikes narrowly missed the vehicle but smashed into the third, sending the unsuspecting rider from Wokingham flying.

Emergency services quickly descended on the scene, with firefighters and an air ambulance dispatched to the site of the incident just outside Gael.

But the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local prosecutors opened an investigation into the incident, but said it is being treated as an accident according to French media.

The year prior, a horror crash between three vehicles in northern France left a British mother-of-ten among those killed.

The British victim’s identity was reported by the Jewish Chronicle as Miriam Posen, of the Orthodox Jewish community in Stamford Hill, London, who was travelling in a van containing seven members of her family.

Izzy Posen, Miriam’s eldest son, paid tribute to his mother on social media as friends and family of Mrs Posen gathered at her north London home to rally around children she had left behind.

‘My mother sadly passed away yesterday in tragic circumstances. She was young and healthy and full of the spirit of life. I loved her so much,’ he wrote.

A family spokesman said: ‘Miriam was a devoted mother who was loved so much by her family and friends. She was a very special person who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

‘We are still coming to terms with what has happened. It was only on Sunday night.’

Miriam is believed to have been 50 years old at the time of her death.

A local emergency services spokesperson who attended the crash site said: ‘Three people are dead and dozens injured, including many children.

‘A van with a British family of seven people on board was one of the three vehicles involved in the crash.

‘A British woman died instantly, along with two others travelling in another vehicle.

‘The other passengers – aged between six and 48 – were taken to hospital in Cambrai and Arras.’
