A man has died after reportedly being sucked into the engine of a plane at Il Caravaggio International Airport on July 8, per Corriere della Sera and U.K. newspaper Metro.

The victim was reportedly not a staff member of the airport or a traveler, but rather a trespasser who entered the runway at around 10:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday morning before being sucked into the engine of a plan which was preparing for takeoff. The victim gained access to the runway by entering through a security door, which was marked as leading “directly to the aircraft parking areas.”

Il Caravaggio International sources told Corriere della Sera that the victim “entered the wrong way near the terminal, abandoned his car, and started running towards the inside.” He then reportedly made his way to the arrivals area located on the airport’s ground floor before he entered the security door leading to the runway.

Flight operations were suspended at the airport on Tuesday morning from 10:20 a.m. until around noon local time “due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway.” At least nine flights were delayed and a further 19 were cancelled after the incident. “The cause of the problem is currently under investigation by law enforcement authorities,” a statement on the airport’s website reads.

Volotea Airlines confirmed to Metro that “one of its aircraft, an Airbus A319, flight number V7-3511 from Milan-Bergamo (BGY) to Asturias (OVD), was involved in an incident at Milan-Bergamo Airport today at 10:35h local time (8:35h UTC). Initial findings indicate that, following the incident involving one of the aircraft’s engines, one person who was not onboard the flight and has no affiliation with the company sustained serious injuries.”

“Volotea is doing everything possible to support the affected passengers at this difficult time, while working in close coordination with the Italian authorities,” the statement continued. “The company is also providing psychological support to both passengers and crew members involved. The airline has established a toll-free number for family and friends of those who may have been onboard the aircraft.”
