EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Northwest Wisconsin Champions flag football program will send two teams to the national championships in Canton, Ohio.
Over the weekend of July 17th-20th, the 14U and 12U teams will battle for national titles.
For the last 10 years, the Northwest Wisconsin Champions football organization competed with some of the region’s best.
“It’s just been a fun adventure,” said NWC organizer Bobby Diaz. “We started in 2015, and now we’re at a crescendo in some respect where we won three championships last year, and each year we’ve gotten better, and we’re winning championships.”
For the next seven days, the 14U and 12U teams prepare for the nation’s best over in Canton, Ohio.
“It’s just a great journey to watch these young kids. Some of them been with us for three years and they’re getting bigger and stronger,” Diaz added. “To go to nationals from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and you’re playing some of the top teams in the country, and we have a chance to be on ESPN and so forth if we win two games, which we can conceivably do by both teams, it’s awesome.”
Beyond the success on the game field, Diaz prides the program on preparing the players for football futures, honing skills and attitudes necessary for the high school level.
“We have a really good coaching staff, and we’ve all been together for just about three years now, and the kids have learned, honestly, a varsity practice plan,” Diaz said. “We do the correct things. We’re teaching kids the correct way. We’ve got great coaches. We pride ourselves on being the best practice player, because that’s going to make you the best game player.”
Ahead of two chances at national glory, Diaz emphasizes the success already achieved, win or lose.
“I want us to go there and represent our community, our families, and do our best to try to win a championship, and if we do, we do, and if we don’t, we’re gonna have a great time,” Diaz stated.
Diaz encourages all interested players and parents to explore the NWC’s upcoming camps and leagues. Information on both can be found on their Facebook page.
