Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report – When Is It Basallo Time?

Sport: MLB

The All-Star Break is a great time to assess our fantasy baseball rosters to see what tweaks are needed to make the final push to the top of the standings. In some cases, guessing on the breakout prospect players can be the key to unlocking production in fantasy lineups.

Many teams that are out of the playoffs are going to start calling up prospects to get some playing time in 2025. Disappointing teams like the Cleveland Guardians and the Baltimore Orioles have some of the league’s top prospects lingering, and hopefully, their slide this season means we see some of those faces soon.

As players graduate to the Major Leagues, new names will always take their place as the season goes along, but for now, some prospects are just starting to get their first shots. All stats are as of games completed on July 13th. Today’s piece will focus on the most relevant prospect news from around the minor leagues, focusing on the biggest names in the 2025 Top 100 list and those who have recently been called up.

Now, at the All-Star Break, let’s take stock of where some of the Top 100 are right now.

Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report

Kevin McGonigle DET, SS

Kevin McGonigle has only been in Double-A for three games, but that’s because he tore up High-A ball in West Michigan to the tune of a .372/.462/.648 line with seven home runs and 19 doubles in 36 games. His debut in MLB is unlikely this season, but he has emerged as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball.

Max Clark, DET, OF

The Tigers also moved up Max Clark to AA recently after he hit .285/.430/.427 with seven home runs and 12 steals. Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle both moved up at the same time and look to form a duo that the Tigers can build around for the next 10 years. In his last 21 days, Clark is hitting .352/.444/.574 with three home runs.

Samuel Basallo, BAL, C/1B

Samuel Basallo is the youngest hitter in AAA, but you wouldn’t know from his massive production this year. He is hitting .264/.383/.591 with 19 home runs in 62 games this season. It’s not a matter of “if,” but “when” Basallo will make his Major League debut this season. If the Orioles trade off pieces at the deadline, he could come up sooner rather than later to play first or DH.

JJ Wetherholt, STL, SS

JJ Weatherholt got a well-deserved promotion to AAA last week after hitting .300/.425/.466 with seven home runs and 14 stolen bases. The Cardinals also are planning to play him at third base some at AAA as they want him to have as much versatility as possible for when they do finally call up their prized 22-year-old shortstop. Wetherholt did play plenty of third at West Virginia so the position is not new to him.

Bryce Eldridge, SFG, 1B

The Bryce Eldridge situation in San Francisco depends a lot on what Rafael Devers does the rest of the season in regards to first base. Does he play there in the second half, and is he effective? Eldridge is ready if Devers doesn’t work out there. In his 34 games in AA this year, Eldridge hit .280/.350/.512 with 15 extra base hits. He already has three homers in 16 AAA games and looks poised to play with the big club at some point this season.

Travis Bazzana, CLE, 2B

Travis Bazzana, the number one overall pick in 2024, was having a solid season in AA before an oblique injury sidelined him indefinitely. For Akron, he hit .252/.362/.433 with four home runs, 17 RBI, and eight steals. He began a rehab assignment last week at the Cleveland spring complex, so the hope is he can at least make it to AAA before the end of the season, if not a cup of coffee in the majors.

Charlie Condon, COL, OF

The Rockies promoted Charlie Condon from High-A to AA at the end of June because he had nothing left to prove after just 35 games. For Spokane, he hit .312/.431/.420 with three home runs. It was a good sign for Condon, who fractured his wrist in Spring Training but was able to return to play on May 20. So far in AA, he is holding his own with a .258/.333/.323 line despite being just 22 years old. He has actually been asked to play in the outfield, first base, and third base this season as the Rockies look to see where they can best use him.

Kyle Teel, CHW, C

Kyle Teel has been up with the White Sox for 25 games. And while he does not have a home run yet, Teel has shown his elite plate discipline with a .372 OBP in 87 plate appearances. He should get plenty of opportunities to play for the hapless White Sox down the stretch, although it appears the White Sox are going to keep sitting him against left-handed pitchers.

Carson Williams, TBR, SS

Another stud 22-year-old shortstop, Carson Williams has struggled at AAA this season. In 82 games, Williams is hitting just .216/.322/.445, although he does have 16 home runs and 31 extra-base hits. The batting average is likely to come around since his plate discipline is so good. There is a chance Williams could make his MLB debut if he turns that around in the next two months. The power is ready, and he just needs a bit more patience (he has 117 strikeouts in 83 AAA games).

Jordan Lawlar, ARI, SS/3B

Jordan Lawlar made it up to the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, but fell on his face and was promptly sent back down. Soon after, Lawlar suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain, and the team has stated he will miss a number of weeks. Lawlar now has two stints with the Diamondbacks, and neither of them has gone well. He is still just 23 years old, but at some point will need to show that his massive potential in AAA (.319/.410/.583 this year) will translate to the majors.

Chase DeLauter, CLE, OF

Chase DeLauter is another Cleveland Guardians prospect who is injured right now. He suffered a wrist problem over the weekend and did not play. It stunts a strong season where he is hitting .278/.383/.476 with five home runs in 34 games for Columbus. The injury doesn’t appear to be serious, however, and he remains on track to make his MLB debut at some point in the second half of this season.

Owen Caissie, CHC, OF

Over the last 14 days, Owen Caissie is hitting .394/.487/1.091 with seven home runs in 39 plate appearances. Overall, he has 19 home runs for AAA Iowa and 40 total extra-base hits. He looks ready for the Major Leagues at age 23, but the Chicago Cubs are already crowded in the outfield positions and at DH. However, if any of Ian Happ, Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong, or Seiya Suzuki suffer an injury, Caissie may be the name that’s called up to fill in.
