Newcastle prepared to move on from pursuit of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as Man City’s interest in former stopper intensifies

Newcastle United are prepared to move on from their interest in Burnley’s James Trafford with a deal still not agreed

Although it is not dead yet, and a 12-month pursuit shows how much they admire the player, Mail Sport understands the club are also comfortable with their current goalkeeper situation.

It would not necessarily be a case of identifying another goalkeeper target if they fail to agree.

Over the past fortnight, Newcastle’s confidence has been less positive than it once was.

Manchester City‘s interest, owing to their buy-back option, is also a complication, although I’m told that has been in background all summer.

City and others have been on the periphery for some time for the England international as Burnley hold out for a fee greater than Newcastle have been offering.

Newcastle and Burnley are not commenting on the situation.

The 22-year-old stopper joined City as a 12-year-old and spent eight years on the club’s books before joining the Clarets in a deal worth £15m in 2023.

He has since made 73 appearances in two seasons across the Premier League and the Championship.
