MUNISING, Mich. (WLUC) – Lots of football, lots of pride and the opportunity to learn how to play the game the right way.
Campers learned all of this in Munising on Saturday at the Detroit Lions Football camp.
Every camper had an experience that they truly enjoyed
“The intercepting drills, because I’m a wide receiver and I like catching the ball and I love the coaches here,” camper Brayden Mckane said.
“Umm probably the cornerback drills, yeah,” camper Owen Nelsen said.
The camp focused on not only the fundamentals of football but also character education and the Detroit Lions’ 5 points of Pride.
“We want to provide educational opportunities for parents, kids and coaches focusing on character development, player health and safety, coaching knowledge, football and fun,” Detroit Lions Football Education Manager, Nik Sandona, said. “That is really what we strive to do in our camps is use football as a median to teach life skills.”
Having this camp in their hometown leaves an impact on the campers, and for Sandona, it is a special place as his parents hail from upper Michigan.
“Principal Lasak has been doing a great job, you know this was a place that we wanted to get back to. We have not been here since I think 201,4 up to the U.P. to do a camp. Since I have gotten this job, the last couple years it has been a priority of mine to make sure we could come up and give the kids and the U.P. a great experience to hopefully teach them some things that they can take back to their youth football programs,” Sandona said. “Not just to Munising but in Marquette, Manistique, Escanaba, Gladstone. All of these other communities that can hopefully help make youth football better in the state of Michigan.”
With football season just around the corner, it’s a boost to the community and may have garnered a few more Detroit fans for this upcoming season.
