Pete Alonso dealing with hand contusion, out of Sunday lineup

NEW YORK — Pete Alonso is out of the Mets’ starting lineup for the first time in 2025.

After starting in each of the Mets’ first 99 games, Alonso is dealing with a right hand contusion and was absent for the start of Sunday’s series finale against the Reds at 1:40 p.m. at Citi Field.

Carlos Mendoza said that X-rays on Alonso’s hand came back negative. The Mets first baseman said he was feeling better and could potentially be considered to come off the bench.

“When you’re dealing with a hand injury, we thought it was best to get ahead of ourselves here because it can linger,” Mendoza said. “Having the conversation with him, with the trainers, we thought it was just best. … If you keep pushing these type of injuries, it could affect them.”

Mendoza believes the injury stems from Alonso being jammed a couple of times and it compounding itself. The Mets manager learned of the injury following the first baseman’s second at-bat on Saturday. Alonso, who is considered day-to-day, did not miss a game throughout the 2024 season and has a streak of 353 consecutive games played that stretches back to June 18, 2023.

Mark Vientos is making his 10th career start at first base and batting cleanup in Alonso’s place.

“We feel comfortable with Mark,” Mendoza said. “There’s a reason why he’s there. Jared (Young) was in consideration but since we’re facing a lefty today, it was an easier decision.”

“I’m familiar with the position and gonna play hard,” Vientos told NorthJersey.com.

The Mets have one last chance to avoid the ultimate stumble out of the All-Star break.

After dropping the opening two games of their series with the Reds, the Mets can mitigate a potential sweep at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday at Citi Field.

The finale will be a duel of All-Star starters.

David Peterson will be on the mound for the Mets. The left-hander has been their most consistent starter this season, posting a 6-4 record with a 3.06 ERA through 18 starts to secure his first All-Star appearance this week.

Peterson threw a scoreless fourth inning in the Midsummer Classic.

On the other side, Andrew Abbott has filled the role as Reds ace. The lefty is 8-1 with a 2.07 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.
