Jazz Chisholm Jr. at center of Yankees-Braves gamesmanship incident

ATLANTA — A day after Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s animated exchange with an Atlanta Braves coach, the Yankees second baseman still wouldn’t publicly comment about it.

“Nothing to say,’’ Chisholm said pleasantly Sunday morning, after Saturday’s no comment.

The to-do between Chisholm and Eddie Perez occurred during the Yankees’ four-run sixth inning Saturday night, on the way to a thrilling 12-9 comeback win at Truist Park.

At issue was Chisholm’s obvious-to-the-Braves signaling pitch locations while on second base.

If Chisholm interpreted Perez’s pointing to his own head as meaning the Braves might throw at him, well, the Atlanta coach said that wasn’t what he conveyed in their exchange.

“I was just saying, ‘Be Smart.’ I like that guy. He’s one of my favorites,’’ Perez told MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. “And he got mad about it.’’

Immediately after Saturday’s game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone felt that Perez’s actions “will probably be looked at and should be’’ by MLB officials.

After hearing Perez’s comments, Boone said he hoped the Braves coach didn’t mean Chisholm might be thrown at, “because obviously there’s no place for that.”

“That’s certainly something that would not be OK,’’ Boone added.

Chisholm batted twice more in Saturday’s game after the sixth-inning kerfuffle, without incident.

Boone said Sunday that he hadn’t spoken with anyone at MLB, or with Perez or Braves manager Brian Snitker, about the matter.

As to the relaying of signs or location and other matters of on-field gamesmanship, “that’s all within the parameters of the rules,’’ said Boone. “And every team we play against, it’s no different.

“You’re constantly trying to find advantages where you can,’’ he said of all teams, “trying to find ways to help you win a ballgame.’’
