Game Thread #99: Milwaukee Brewers (58-40) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (58-41)

The Brewers are on the brink of a 10-game winning streak as they face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

If they reach that mark tonight, they’ll push their record in July to an astounding 12-3. It’s been a close series so far, with wins of just a three-run margin (2-0 Friday, 8-7 Saturday) this series, but it’s a decisive statement either way. The Brewers are keeping pace in the division and asserting themselves as a serious threat in the National League.

Jose Quintana makes his 14th start this afternoon, doubling up as his last start came against the Dodgers before the All-Star break. For the season, Quintana has a 3.28 ERA. His performance against Los Angeles on July 9 finished with a line of six innings pitched, one earned run, and four strikeouts while giving up just two hits. He walked four batters, as well, but limited the offensive output from the Dodgers’ star-studded lineup.

For the Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw takes the mound, one of the most accomplished players in the league. In his age-37 season, Kershaw continues to display his masterly talents, posting a 3.38 ERA over 50 23 innings. He doesn’t strike out many batters anymore, but he continues to dominate with an impressive 2.95 ERA across his last seven starts.

His last start was in Milwaukee, back on July 8, when he pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs. He gave up six hits and walked two, with three strikeouts in that outing.

The Brewers have been the seventh-ranked team by wRC+ against lefties since the start of June, so this will be another fascinating event against one of the most prestigious pitchers in the sport.

In the lineup, Jackson Chourio moves up to the leadoff spot in Sal Frelick’s absence. Chourio will be joined in the outfield by Isaac Collins and Blake Perkins. Around the infield, Caleb Durbin starts at third, with Joey Ortiz, Andruw Monasterio, and Andrew Vaughn filling in the rest of the positions. William Contreras takes the designated hitter role today, leaving Eric Haase to set up behind the plate.

In a roster update, Jake Bauers was placed on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder impingement. Tyler Black was recalled from Triple-A, as Milwaukee is suddenly down two first basemen.

Today’s first pitch is at 3:10 p.m. CT and can be seen on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin and heard on the Brewers Radio Network.
