Two Hudson Catholic football coaches were among six people who died Friday in Newark when the car they were in crashed into a support column under the Pulaski Skyway.
According to a post on “The Knight Report,” Hudson Catholic head coach Lamar McKnight and assistant coach Brad Cunningham, a former Rutgers player, were killed.
Cunningham played at Rutgers under current coach Greg Schiano in the 2005 season.
The tragedy garnered strong reaction on social media. Both men were held in extremely high regard and did a lot for their schools. And according to posts, they did even more for their players.
The Hawks qualified for the playoffs this year and finished with a 5-4 record, including wins in three of their final four games.
McKnight took over the program nearly a year ago. He posted on X that he was happy to be home.
“After 8 amazing years at Union City, I have been offered and accepted as the Head Football Coach at Hudson Catholic Regional HS,” he wrote on X. “Thank you Mr. Matthews, Nick Mariniello and the entire Hudson Catholic administration for this amazing opportunity JERSEY CITY IM BACK HOME!”
