When the Michigan football team takes the field on Saturday night, the Wolverines will do so as huge favorites in the betting market.
The Wolverines are currently 34.5-point favorites to beat New Mexico in their season opener at Michigan Stadium (7:30 p.m., NBC), a nearly five-touchdown margin that could signal a lopsided victory ahead.
As of Friday afternoon, popular sportsbooks BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel were all in alignment on the spread.
Michigan opened at exactly that spot, a 34.5-point favorite, when lines were posted for the game in June. In late-July, the number began ticking up to 35 and 36 before topping out at 37.5 earlier this month.
Since then, the number has fallen back to 34.5, where it sits at nearly every major domestic sportsbook. The projected total for the game ranges from 48.5 to 49.5 depending on the book.
Michigan has opened as a betting favorite in every season opener since 2018, with several of those games attracting massive lines. And while the Wolverines have won every one of those openers on the field, they’re just 3-4 against the spread.
Sherrone Moore’s team is coming off a disappointing 8-5 mark in 2024, a season plagued by struggles in the passing game. Michigan finished just 6-7 against the spread, covering in five of its final six games after starting the season an ugly 1-6 ATS.
