What is your preferred tournament format (e.g. large-field, single-entry) to play on this slate? How do you plan to beat that field of opponents? What tactic or strategy will set you apart?
CheeseIsGood: I have a preference for smaller-field and single-entry tournaments when there is chalk that I am interested in fading. It’s not that I don’t like the Cubs; it’s just that I see so much good high-end offense that they can be outscored even if they have a big game. I will gravitate towards those smaller tournaments where the Cubs should be more popular, and I’ll pivot first to the Yankees and Mariners and then to something from the group of Tigers, Royals, Rangers, and A’s. Because I’m going to be different, I’ll just eat the Robbie Ray chalk, as well as Paul Skenes if that weather cooperates.
stevietpfl: I’m going to focus on single-entry contests. I think we have a lot of great hitting options. In single-entry contests, I’m going to fade the Cubs and be overweight on the A’s, Rangers, and Yankees. I like Robbie Ray, and I plan on being overweight on him as well. I also like some of the younger pitchers. I think both Jonah Tong and Payton Tolle have upside tonight.
Dean78904: I mostly focus on single-entry and smaller-field types of contests. We have a big slate, but I expect to shrink it pretty drastically. My pitching pool will likely stop at Robbie Ray, Jonah Tong, and the pitchers in the PIT/BOS game (weather pending), Paul Skenes and Payton Tolle. Officially, I’m still debating how hard I’m going to go with the Cubs, but if I wind up being in on them in a lineup, I’ll try to avoid pairing them with Ray. Beyond the Cubs, my next favorite stacks are the Yankees, Rangers, A’s, Astros, and Padres.
Who is your favorite pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
CheeseIsGood: Robbie Ray – It’s concerning that we had an old school Ray flop in his last start, but he’s really been a different pitcher this season and much more consistent than the old Ray (who would’ve fallen on the bad side of the ‘Robbie Ray Rule’ on this slate). What we’ve seen this season is a guy with a massive pitch-count leash and control more in line with where he was in his best years. More than anything, this is about the matchup with an Orioles team whose active roster ranks dead last in the league in ISO and wOBA against LHP, and 7 batters in the projected lineup have a K% above 25% against LHP this season. I’ll never blame anyone for fading Ray chalk, but he does look underpriced here.
