Berlin trying to rally against Upper Arlington

Berlin’s Walther Anderson makes a 23-yard field goal with 54 seconds left to pull the Bears to within 16-10 of UA. Berlin then recovers the onside kick.

Canal Winchester in position to take the lead

Davidson’s defense comes up with a red zone stop at its own 19-yard line. Cormac Snyder picks off quarterback Quinton McGhee on fourth-and-5 with about 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Canal’s defense then gets a three-and-out, and Dre Jackson’s 44-yard punt return gives Canal the ball at the Davidson 16-yard line.

UA defense holds again

The Bears come up with another big defensive stop, benefiting from a few Berlin penalties and a failed hook-and-lateral on fourth down to take over at their own 30 with 5 minutes left. UA leads 16-7.

Canal Winchester storms back to tie Hilliard Davidson

Canal Winchester has turned up its offense in the second half. Dre Jackson’s 1-yard run from the wildcat on fourth-and-goal with 58 seconds left in the third quarter has tied the game at 21, after Davidson led 21-0. The drive went 95 yards in 12 plays. The key play: Quinton McGhee found Jackson on a deep ball for 61 yards on third-and-11 from Canal’s 4-yard line.

UA re-establishes two-score lead early in fourth

Edward Oakley’s third field goal of the night, this from 35 yards, puts UA ahead 16-7 with 8:52 left. UA gained only 3 yards on a possession set up by a lost Berlin fumble, but the Golden Bears lead by two scores.

History at Hilliard Darby

Darby beats Bradley 21-7 for coach Brad Burchfield’s first win with the Panthers and the 200th of his career.

Canal Winchester rallying against Davidson

Canal Winchester’s offense picked up where it left off in the first half, with a scoring drive. This one went 65 yards in six plays. Jamari Snow ran it in from 5 yards with 10:50 left in the second quarter to cut Davidson’s lead to 21-14.

Tide turns, Berlin gets first touchdown

After the blocked field goal, Berlin drove 87 yards in nine plays, a drive sustained by a 31-yard run on a fake punt by Dylan Amos. Tyce Dent tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Colton Less, and Berlin is within 13-7 with 1:36 left in the third.

Bradley offense comes up empty

Bradley moves to the Darby 30 before losing the ball on downs with 5:02 remaining. Darby leads 21-7.

Berlin’s defense keeping Bears in the game

UA forced its fourth three-and-out of the night and then drove to Berlin’s 4, but two consecutive false start penalties and a sack preceded Edward Oakley’s 39-yard field goal try. That was blocked by Grant Gibson, and Berlin is still in this halfway through the third, trailing 13-0.

Darby closing in on Week 2 win over Bradley

Following its defensive stand, Kohen Kornegay scores on a 5-yard run to give Darby a 21-7 lead with 6:19 remaining. It’s the third touchdown of the night for the junior.

Darby defense holds again

The Panthers take over at the Bradley 36 after Rashaud Truss is stopped short on fourth-and 1.

Darby leads Bradley 14-7 after three quarters

Panthers coach Brad Burchfield is looking for his first win at Darby. It also would be his 200th career win.

Darby turns away Bradley

Bradley quickly drives down the field looking to tie the game, but Cedric Holman’s interception in the end zone ends the threat with 2:39 left in the third quarter.

Halftime stats from Hilliard Davidson-Canal Winchester

Dayne Schmidt has rushed for 68 yards on nine carries, including a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that put Davidson up 21-0. He also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass. Josh DiBlasio is 5 of 8 passing for 73 yards with a TD and an interception.

Canal Winchester’s Jamari Snow has rushed 13 times for 51 yards and scored on an 8-yard run.

Darby turns squib-kick recovery into touchdown

Darby takes advantage of recovering a squib kick to open the second half as Kohen Kornegay scores on a 4-yard run for a 14-7 lead with 6:59 left in the third quarter, capping a 35-yard drive. Scott VanVranken recovered the squib kick for the Panthers.

UA’s Backes, Wolpert lead first-half stats

Total first-half stats are close to what was previously reported. Total yards are UA 177 (76 rushing, 101 passing), Berlin 17 (3 rushing, 14 passing).

For UA, QB Luke Backes has completed 11 of 18 passes for 101 yards. Drew Theado has nine rushes for 54 yards, 45 of which came on UA’s biggest play from scrimmage. Trent Wolpert has caught five passes for 82 yards.

For Berlin, Tyce Dent has completed 2 of 4 passes for 14 yards. Both completions went to Dallen Maxson.

Halftime: UA 13, Berlin 0

Edward Oakley’s 36-yard field goal with 1.3 seconds left in the half puts UA ahead 13-0 in a game that could be more lopsided if not for Berlin’s defense keeping them in it. Unofficially, UA has 171 total yards to 16 for Berlin, which has run 16 plays to UA’s 35.

Canal Winchester gets on the scoreboard

Canal Winchester gets into the end zone before halftime. Jamari Snow’s 8-yard touchdown run caps a 13-play, 80-yard drive with 52.7 seconds left in the second quarter. Quinton McGhee completed a 24-yard pass to Caleb Clay on third-and-10 to keep the drive alive. Davidson leads 21-7.

Lancaster leads Dublin Scioto late in first half

Hilliard Davidson is dominating Canal Winchester

A drive fueled by Canal Winchester penalties went 76 yards in seven plays. Dayne Schmidt scored on a 7-yard run with 6:39 left in the second quarter to put Davidson up 21-0.

Believe it or not, it’s already halftime at Hilliard Darby

Darby and Bradley are tied at 7 after a rapidly played and entertaining first half. Darby has rushed for 151 yards compared to 56 for Bradley.

Olentangy Orange leads Westerville North 21-0

How about these black jerseys and pants for Orange?

Canal Winchester’s defense gets a stop

Isiah Kemper and Eric Hardy sack Davidson quarterback Josh DiBlasio at the Wildcats’ 22-yard line, and Brody Harmon picks off DiBlasio on third-and-31 from the Davidson 7-yard line. Canal’s offense has sputtered so far in the first half.

Pickerington North leads Cleveland St. Ignatius 14-7

Darby drive ends with interception

Darby continues to dominate on the ground as it marches to the Bradley 10, but DeShawn Lowe’s interception in the end zone ends the threat with 3:56 left in the first half.

UA driving again as first quarter ends

If UA’s defense was a concern with the graduation of current Michigan State lineman Cal Thrush, it has not looked like one this evening. The Bears forced another three-and-out and will begin the second quarter with second-and-10 at their own 41. UA has outgained Berlin 138-10 so far.

Bradley ties Darby at 7

Bralyn Gordin’s 9-yard touchdown run with 9:49 left in the second quarter pulls Bradley into a 7-all tie with Darby.

UA cashes in, takes two-score lead

After forcing a three-and-out, UA took full advantage of this trip into the red zone. Jaden Chindavong’s 3-yard touchdown run put UA ahead 10-0 with 2:38 left in the first. The drive encompassed 68 yards in seven plays and took 3:25.

Darby leads Bradley 7-0 after one quarter

Darby takes advantage of the interception as Kohen Kornegay scores on a 4-yard run with 20.2 seconds left in the first quarter to cap a 59-yard drive. The Panthers lead 7-0 after one quarter, but Bradley will have the ball at the Darby 39 after a 15-yard run by Rashaud Truss.

Davidson expands early lead

A 7-yard punt sets up Davidson’s second score, an 11-yard swing pass to Dayne Schmidt, who ran it into the end zone with 4:35 left in the first quarter. The shanked punt gave the Wildcats the ball at the Canal Winchester 24-yard line.

Field goal gives UA early lead at Berlin

A promising Golden Bears drive to begin the game at Berlin fizzled inside the 10-yard line, but UA still came away with points. Junior kicker Edward Oakley, who is receiving plenty of attention from Division I programs, nailed a 27-yard field goal to put UA ahead 3-0 just less than four minutes in.

Darby defense gets an interception

Darby gets the ball back as Dylan Santagata intercepts a Declan O’Neil pass. Santagata is the son of former Darby coach John Santagata.

Davidson takes early lead at Canal Winchester

Davidson reaches the end zone on its opening drive, going 64 yards in seven plays with 8:11 left in the first quarter. Marcus Thiaw scored on a 1-yard run, and Josh DiBlasio hit Dane Schmidt for a 36-yard screen pass during the drive. Canal Winchester went three-and-out on its opening drive.

Hilliard Darby comes up short on first drive

Darby moves into Bradley territory, but is faced with a fourth-and-10 at the 27-yard line. Jonah Marsh’s pass falls incomplete, and Bradley takes over with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

It’s 7 p.m., and we’re off and running

Welcome to Week 2. Here’s our first update, from DiRenna: “It’s a beautiful night for football as Hilliard Darby is playing host to crosstown rival Hilliard Bradley. Darby will receive opening kickoff.”

Ohio high school football schedule Week 2

UA visits Berlin coming off a 31-6 win over Whitehouse Anthony Wayne, while Berlin lost 14-13 at DeSales – in part because of a touchdown pass that should have been ruled incomplete.

Berlin’s defense, led by 6-foot-4, 280-pound Miami University commit Hudson Aultman, will try to slow down a UA offense led by senior quarterback Luke Backes.

Darby’s contest against Bradley will be the first Hilliard rivalry game for new coach Brad Burchfield, who led Hartley to 168 wins and three state championships in 17 seasons. Darby lost 21-20 to Lancaster last week in Burchfield’s debut, while Bradley beat Groveport 17-10.

Davidson plays at Canal Winchester after winning its opener 38-7 at Mansfield Senior. Senior running back Dayne Schmidt rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns, and senior quarterback Josh DiBlasio added 139 total yards and two scores.

Earlier this week, Davidson coach Jeremey Scally praised Canal, saying “they just jump off the film,” especially junior tackle Gabe Merrill. Canal defeated Thomas Worthington 48-17 last week in coach Rob Page‘s debut.
