ESPN’s Lee Corso was perfect with his final ‘College GameDay’ picks before retirement

Lee Corso went out on top.

Corso signed off from ESPN’s “College GameDay” with one final show Saturday, which he ended by throwing on the Brutus the Buckeye mascot head like he did almost 30 years ago when he made his first mascot head prediction. That made for an incredible moment for Corso and the “GameDay” crew from Ohio Stadium.

As the slate of Week 1 games played out, Corso’s sendoff got only better. All six teams that Corso picked to win this past weekend came out on top, including Florida State, who stunned No. 8 Alabama in perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend. Corso was the only “GameDay” member to select the Seminoles on the show Saturday morning.

Corso’s final prediction of the weekend came true Sunday night, when No. 10 Miami held on to beat No. 6 Notre Dame at home.

To take Corso’s perfect weekend even further, every team he has been associated with throughout his career also won. The three schools that he led as a head coach — Indiana, Louisville and Northern Illinois — all won their respective season-openers. Corso played at Florida State during the 1956 campaign.

Corso, 90, announced earlier this year that he was going to retire from ESPN. He had been a part of “GameDay” since it became a traveling show in 1993, and has worked alongside analyst Kirk Herbstreit for decades. The show Saturday morning, which took place before No. 3 Ohio State knocked off No. 1 Texas, drew a record 3.5 million viewers. More than 5 million watched the final 15 minutes of the show to see Corso’s final pick, which took place at midfield and drew a massive ovation from fans at Ohio Stadium.

While “College GameDay” won’t be the same without Corso there each week, he got the perfect sendoff.
