There isn’t much to say about this one, other than Alabama was clearly the second best team on the football field today. For all the talk in the offseason about how things were going to be different, how the workouts were tougher, how the entire team was committed to getting Alabama football back to where it is supposed to be, this team came out and played as if they expected to win on the road because they’re Alabama.
The first offensive possession looked awesome, and perhaps that contributed to some complacency. Or, perhaps this team just isn’t very tough. Whatever the reason, Florida State was the more physical team all afternoon and got the win that they deserved. To make matters worse, Ryan Williams capped off an atrocious day marred by several dropped passes with a likely concussion after his final dropped ball of the afternoon.
The numbers aren’t pretty. DeBoer’s opening act was Alabama’s first four-loss season since 2007. Today, he led Alabama to its first season opening loss in 23 seasons. He has lost three of his last four games in embarrassing fashion, and has lost five of his last six games away from Tuscaloosa, the only road win coming against a 2024 LSU squad that couldn’t stop a Pee Wee offense.
This is going to be a tough week for DeBoer. He had given off a palpable confidence about this team all offseason and seemed as surprised at his team’s performance as the fans. The honeymoon period is over, and it’s fair to wonder if he’s coaching for his job the rest of the season.
Yeah, it’s quick, but this kind of listlessness and lack of discipline is never going to be acceptable at Alabama. Hopefully they can get it turned around, but there is little reason to have confidence at this stage.
