Angels’ Taylor Ward exits game after busting head open on Astros’ dangerous metal outfield wall

The Los Angeles Angels have had quite the season — exciting at times, and full of promise. One of the biggest reasons for optimism is their talented young core, which continues to show growth. Among them, second baseman Christian Moore has already earned praise from teammate Zach Neto.

“He’s going to be here for a long time,” Angels shortstop Zach Neto said. “For him to be able to do that in the eighth inning with that swing, and have the confidence to be able to do it again in the 10th, just shows who he is. We drafted him for a reason, and he’s here for a reason.”

This weekend, the Angels were in Houston, where they had a chance to win the series after a victory on Saturday night. Unfortunately, a scary moment occurred during Sunday’s game when left fielder Taylor Ward collided with the metal outfield wall.

“Angels left fielder Taylor Ward hit the left-field scoreboard hard chasing a hit by Ramón Urías, it appeared face-first. Ward immediately waved for a trainer and is being tended to in the outfield. A trainer is holding a towel to his head and a cart is there to drive him off,” Houston Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara wrote.

What makes the incident even more troubling is that Ward and teammate Jo Adell had discussed the wall’s danger just the night before.

“Scary scene here in Houston. Hopefully Taylor Ward is OK. Just last night after the game, he and Jo Adell were talking about how dangerous it can be to hit that out of town scoreboard wrong,” Angels writer Jeff Fletcher wrote.

Despite the unfortunate injury, the Angels went on to win the series, securing a 3–0 victory on Sunday. There has not yet been an official update on Ward’s condition, but it appeared he may have busted his head open. Hopefully, a few stitches will suffice and no concussion was sustained.

Still, with incidents like this, MLB should consider looking into the safety of the left-field wall in Houston, as players’ concerns — and now injuries — are becoming hard to ignore.
