Following a mixed-bag 38-19 win against Northern Arizona in Week 1, ASU football would not qualify for its second straight College Football Playoff, according the The Athletic’s live bracket.
The Sun Devils, based on an algorithm that factors in win-loss record, strength of resume and strength of record, are ranked No. 23 and the fourth-highest Big 12 team behind Utah (14), Texas Tech (T-17) and Iowa State (T-20).
The bracket currently only has one Big 12 team, Texas Tech, making the 12-team playoff as the No. 11-seed.
TCU is the only Big 12 team that has yet to play a game in 2025. The Horned Frogs get Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels on Labor Day.
How ASU’s College Football Playoff chances look very early on
The Athletic broke each CFP contender’s postseason odds down into four subcategories: make playoff, win conference, earn a first-round bye and win the championship.
ASU, which is predicted to finish 8-4 in 2025, was given a 20% chance to make the playoff, 13% to win the Big 12, 2% to earn a first-round bye and less than 1% to win it all.
The preseason No. 11 in the AP poll was picked 16th out of 16 teams in the Big 12 its debut season last year and virtually had no perceived shot at the CFP, proving projections are just projections.
