Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins to miss approximately 6 weeks due to left thumb UCL sprain

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins told reporters Tuesday that his MRI revealed a left thumb UCL sprain that will sideline him for approximately six weeks.

Hoskins will be in a splint while he recovers from the injury, which he suffered during a 4-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

“I’ll be doing my work in the quiet, helping these guys as much as I can off the field so that we can continue our push toward the playoffs,” Hoskins said.

Hoskins said he’ll be in the splint for a couple of weeks, and after some strengthening, he’ll resume baseball activities.

The 32-year-old Hoskins, now in his second season with the Brewers, experienced soreness in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game after an abnormal putout. He stepped off first base to catch an off-the-mark throw from Brewers shortstop Joey Ortiz before tagging out Marlins first baseman Eric Wagaman.

Hoskins received medical attention after the play, but he finished the inning. He was replaced by Jake Bauers in the fifth.

“Unfortunately, the timing of the play didn’t allow me to tag him in a safer manner,” Hoskins said. “But, again, that’s a part of the game. That’s a part of the position.”

Hoskins is slashing .242/.340/.428 with 12 home runs and 42 RBI in 82 games. He has hit 12 doubles, and he delivered his eighth career triple on Saturday before his injury.

Although Hoskins has never dealt with this specific injury, he has missed significant time in his career, most notably in 2023, when he sat out his entire final season with the Philadelphia Phillies after tearing his left ACL in a spring training game.

With Hoskins on the IL, the Brewers called up 27-year-old first baseman Andrew Vaughn, whom Milwaukee acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the Aaron Civale trade on June 13.

Vaughn has already taken advantage of the opportunity, homering in his first Brewers at-bat after joining the team. His three-run blast over the left-center-field wall was part of a five-run first inning Monday that chased Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

The Brewers ended up winning 9-1, improving to 51-40 on the year. They are currently 3.5 games back of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
