PROVO, Utah – The big storyline for BYU football entering fall camp next week is going to be at the quarterback position.
Jake Retzlaff has landed at Tulane after officially withdrawing from BYU earlier this month.
So everyone is asking, who will be the next starting quarterback for the Cougars?
Who will be the starting quarterback for BYU football in 2025?
Will it be Utah State transfer McCae Hillstead or Western Michigan transfer Treyson Bourguet, two players entering their second year in the program?
Or is Stanford transfer Bear Bachmeier going to rise to the top?
The quarterback position is always a big deal in Provo, especially when you consider the history of talented signal-callers who have rolled through the program over the years.
Then, you add a quarterback battle that was unexpected entering this season, and it’s as hot a topic as the heat here in the dog days of summer.
Some of those legends returned to campus on Tuesday to share advice to the current group of quarterbacks.
Steve Young & John Beck visit current BYU QB room
John Beck and Steve Young were in Provo to talk with the four quarterbacks set to compete next week in camp to be BYU’s next starting QB.
BYU football assistant quarterbacks coach Matt Mitchell, who received that promoted job title officially last month, shared a picture on X with the caption, “Got some great advice from two legends today! #GoCougs.”

The picture featured Beck and Young pictured with Bachmeier, Bourguet, Hillstead, and former Bountiful High standout and true freshman Emerson Geilman, alongside Mitchell.
John Beck, who continues to be a trainer at 3DQB in California, has worked with some of the quarterbacks featured in the photo. Beck was a three-year starter for the Cougars from 2004 to 2006.
Steve Young began his BYU career as an eighth-string quarterback and ended his time in Provo as an All-American before going on to a Pro Football Hall of Fame career in the NFL.
Bourguet quoted the post on X with a pair of goat emojis.
