The California Lutheran football team knows how to win, and head coach Anthony Lugo is familiar with what it takes to get it done.
The Kingsmen have veered off course a bit in recent seasons, but what’s better than a fresh new campaign to begin turning things around.
Cal Lutheran is coming off a 2-8 season, its third losing season in a row, but the year did end with a win over conference foe La Verne. At least that’s something to build on when the 2025 season gets going Sept. 6 against Pacific Lutheran.
Since becoming the head coach at Cal Lutheran in 2021, Lugo is 15-25, and that includes winning his first five games at the helm.
Prior to assuming his current role, Lugo spent five years as the team’s offensive coordinator, which followed stints as the secondary coach (2008-2012) and special teams coordinator/linebackers coach (2013-2015).
That means Lugo was in the thick of it all as the Kingsmen dominated the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, winning four consecutive conference titles from 2009-2012. During his first five years with the team, Cal Lutheran was 39-10 with four 8-2 campaigns.
Now, it’s just a matter of remembering the recipe to that success.

The first round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Playoffs will be Nov. 22.
The 2025 Division III Football Championship title game will be played Jan. 10, 2026, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
