CANTON — The Canton McKinley High School football team aims to go 2-0 when they host the St. Augustine Prep Hermits from New Jersey on Aug. 29. The Week 2 game kicks off at 8 p.m. inside Benson Stadium.

The Bulldogs need a spark on offense. They’ll start on their own 20.
Halftime: St. Augustine Prep leads Canton McKinley 14-0
The Bulldogs defense has settled in and forced two punts and a long missed field goal the last three possessions. McKinley’s offense and special teams are having all kinds of problems. There have been snap issues. The Bulldogs have 28 yards of offense. The Hermits are big, fast and disciplined. McKinley quarterback Trent Hayden has been sacked three times. McKinley will get the second-half kickoff.
Ohio State commit Damari Simeon making his presence felt
The Hermits’ defensive tackle just registered his second sack of the game. McKinley is facing a second-and-16 from its own 30 with 2:16 left in the second quarter.
Some positives for McKinley
St. Augustine Prep misses a 45-yard field goal attempt, and the Bulldogs turn around and pick up their first two first downs of the night. But they stall out near midfield and have to punt.
St. Augustine Prep leads McKinley 14-0 after one quarter
The Bulldogs will have a second-and-9 play from their own 11 to start the second quarter.
St. Augustine Prep powers to another TD
Roman Coney puts his head down and scores on a 1-yard TD run. The PAT kick is good. The Hermits lead McKinley 14-0 with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. Augustine a big, powerful team and its winning the battle upfront.
Quick three and out for McKinley on first possession
Ohio State commit Damari Simeon dropped McKinley QB Trent Hayden for a 6-yard loss to key that defensive possession for the Hermits. A low snap on the punt leads to great field position for Prep at McKinley’s 28.
St. Augustine Prep jumps ahead of Canton McKinley
Impressive opening drive for St. Augustine Prep ends with Ryan Stoehr finding DJ Lewis on an 8-yard touchdown pass. The PAT is good. The Hermits lead McKinley 7-0 with 6:36 left in the first quarter. That was a 10-play, 68-yard drive. Some good running by Ryan Coney on the scoring march.

McKinley football wins head coach Renzy Parnell’s debut
The Bulldogs won head coach Renzy Parnell’s debut 43-25 at Warren Harding last week. McKinley’s defense limited the Raiders to 203 yards of offense and scored as many defensive touchdowns (two) as Harding scored offensive TDs. McKinley sophomore RB Kyelin West impressed with 185 yards and a TD on 19 carries. That TD was a highlight-reel 83-yarder. Senior QB Trent Hayden was 7-of-10 passing for 105 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. McKinley hasn’t started a season 2-0 since 2020.

Get to know the St. Augustine Prep Hermits football team
The Hermits, who are opening their season tonight, return seven starters on offense and eight on defense from a team that went 7-4 last year. Their roster is headlined by Ohio State recruit Damari Simeon (6-3, 290) at defensive tackle, Northwestern recruit Nick Costa (6-4, 245) at defensive end and Rutgers recruit Cameron Greene (6-7, 315) at offensive tackle. Senior Ryan Stoehr is back at quarterback. Pete Lancetta is in his 35th season as a head coach, the last nine with the Hermits. St. Augustine Prep is an all-boys school for grades 8-12 based in southern New Jersey.
Doubleheader OHSAA football action at Benson
McKinley vs. St. Augustine actually is the second game of a Friday doubleheader at Benson. Ashtabula Edgewood faces Ramsey (N.J.) at 5 in the first game.
