The Chapman University football team has enjoyed quite a bit of success in nearly two decades under head coach Bob Owens, but it’s time for the Panthers to begin a new era.
Though a replacement for Owens had not been announced as of his official retirement at the end of June, he certainly will be leaving things in a great place for whomever is brought in to fill his shoes.
The next chapter of Panthers football will get underway at home at Ernie Chapman Stadium in Orange, California, when Hardin-Simmons University visits Sept. 6.
In 18 full seasons, plus the 2020 campaign, which was canceled due to COVID-19, Owens compiled an overall record of 106-63 at Chapman.
His tenure included 13 winning seasons, four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and four trips to the playoffs.
In 2024, the Panthers were 7-3 overall and 6-2 in SCIAC games, winning the conference’s Surf Division. They lost to Pomona-Pitzer in the championship game, 37-34.
Owens was the team’s fourth head coach.
The program began in 1923, when the school was called California Christian, and went on a 62-year hiatus after a winless 1932 season. The team returned to the gridiron in 1994, and Owens took the reigns in time for the 2006 season.
