Chiefs extend Trey Smith, make him ‘highest-paid guard in NFL history’

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to extend the contract of star offensive lineman Trey Smith in a deal that was completed just before a Tuesday deadline for negotiations that had been set by the NFL.

Schefter’s report indicated that the Chiefs had agreed with Smith on a four-year contract worth a maximum of $92,000,000, which will include $70,000,000 in guarantees.

Smith’s new deal will make him the highest-paid guard in NFL history and comes after the 2024 Pro Bowler expressed his desire to return to Kansas City for the long term after the Chiefs used their franchise tag on him earlier this year.

Smith was one of two players who were given the franchise tag in the NFL this offseason. The one-year short-term agreement would have been worth $23,400,000 and been fully guaranteed.

The two-time Super Bowl champion began his career in professional football as a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2021 NFL Draft and has emerged as one of the league’s most outstanding young offensive linemen.

By signing Smith to a four-year contract, Kansas City’s front office has further solidified its investment in the interior of the Chiefs’ offensive line.
