Deion Sanders spent Big 12 Football Media Day trying to take the focus off his health and onto his Colorado Buffaloes football program. One of the main topics he addressed was his ever-expanding coaching staff.
Coach Prime explicitly asked Rick George and CU’s administration to add two specific names from the NFL world:
Byron Leftwich and Mike Zimmer.
“He also made a plea of sorts. He wants to add some coaches to his staff: former NFL quarterback Byron Leftwich and former NFL head coach Mike Zimmer. But he indicated they haven’t been hired yet. Sanders said he’s “praying” they are hired and added to his staff,” USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer relayed.
What Deion wants, Deion tends to get in Boulder.
First, he got record NIL paydays for Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Shilo Sanders. Then, he was able to get Colorado’s brain trust to sign off on hiring Warren Sapp. This offseason, he got Sapp and defensive coordinator Robert Livingston major raises.
If he wants Leftwich and Zimmer, the odds are very high that George will bend to Coach Prime’s will yet again. A 9-3 season and having the Heisman Trophy winner buys you that leeway.
Sanders may never have more leverage than he has right now to see the changes he wants at CU. Leftwich and Zimmer may just be better off for it.
