Dodgers star Freddie Freeman exits with left wrist contusion from HBP amid team’s skid

Injury got added to insult for the skidding Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday after reigning World Series MVP Freddie Freeman took a pitch to the wrist.

The 35-year-old Freeman immediately started walking to the dugout after the 88 mph sinker from Milwaukee Brewers starter Jose Quintana made contact and was soon headed to the clubhouse. The Dodgers announced soon after that he left with a left wrist contusion.

There had already been cause for concern with Freeman, as he has been quietly awful after a torrid start to the season. Since the start of June, he’s hit .201/.274/.282 with only one homer and a 57 wRC+ that ranked as the ninth-worst among qualified players.

Those struggles have played a role in the Dodgers’ woes. The team has lost nine of its last 11 games and is facing a second sweep by the Brewers in that span if they lose Sunday.
