The Colorado Rockies have officially signed shortstop Ethan Holliday, the No. 4 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, to a massive $9 million signing bonus. It’s the largest ever awarded to a high school baseball player.
$9 Million Deal Sets New High School Record for Rockies Prospect
Holliday was widely considered the top prep talent in the draft and ranked second overall on ESPN’s final prospect board. He’s the youngest in a growing baseball dynasty. His father, Matt Holliday, was a Rockies All-Star. His older brother, Jackson, is a rising infielder with the Orioles and the No. 1 overall pick in 2022.

With this deal, Ethan joins a short list of players to hit the $9 million mark. Only three players in draft history have received more. Until now, the high school record was held by Jackson Holliday, who signed for $8.19 million three years ago. That was later topped by Eli Willits, another Oklahoma shortstop, who signed for $8.2 million earlier this year after being taken first overall by the Nationals.
Interestingly, all three of those record bonuses were earned by Oklahoma high school shortstops, an unexpected pipeline for top-tier MLB talent.
