Former Tennessee football star Trey Smith signs contract extension with Chiefs

Former Tennessee Vols football star Trey Smith has finally secured a long-term contract extension in the NFL.

Smith will sign a four-year extension worth $94 million with the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN reported on July 15, just ahead of the deadline later in the day for players on the franchise tag to sign a multi-year contract.

The Jackson native will earn $70 million guaranteed over the life of the deal and will become the highest-paid offensive guard in the NFL.

Smith, 26, was named to his first Pro Bowl last season and is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs. Kansas City gave Smith a franchise tag in the spring ahead of Smith’s unrestricted free agency. Had Smith not signed an extension on Tuesday, he would have made $23.4 million in 2025 under the terms of the franchise tag and could have reached unrestricted free agency next spring.

The former Vol was a two-time All-SEC honoree in Knoxville but slipped into the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to the Chiefs due to concerns about Smith’s history with blood clots.

Through four NFL seasons, Smith has started 80 out of a possible 81 games across the regular and postseason.
