A British mother drowned in front of her husband and teenage son after being swept away by waves in Corfu.
The tragedy occurred at Roda beach in northern Corfu on Wednesday, while the mother, 50, and father had been swimming in the sea.
Due to bad weather and harsh winds, the Brit parents were left battling waves as they attempted to reach the shoreline.
Greek reports of the incident have varied with some saying strong currents and bad weather caused the two swimmers to lose control while others reported that the couple were swept towards a rocky area next to the pier.
Swimmers intervened and onlookers called the fire services but the mother was unable to be rescued. The woman, who has not yet been named, was pulled unconscious from water,’ according to Corfu Press.
Her husband, who suffered minor injuries, was pulled out earlier and watched the rescue process of his wife in a state of panic and shock, alongside their 16-year-old son.
The mother was transported to a private clinic by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead. She was then taken to Corfu General Hospital.
A Foreign Office spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Greece and are in touch with the local authorities.’

According to local media, forensic examination is expected to be conducted in order to clarify the exact causes of her death, namely whether it was due to drowning or fatal blows from the rocks.
The husband and son were also transferred to Corfu General Hospital in a state of shock for first aid and psychological support.
It comes after a British tourist, 67, died on a cruise ship travelling through Corfu last week.
The man passed away while on board the vessel, which was ‘flying the Maltese flag’ in the port of Corfu.
Last year,an elderly British man died after his quad bike veered off a road in Corfu.
The 74-year-old was riding down the Corfu to Lefkimmi Road, near the hamlet of Alevropari, on the south side of the Greek island when he veered off course and fell off his motor, resulting in fatal injuries.
In 2023, a British police woman plunged to her death while on holiday in Corfu.
Hannah Emily Byrne, 22, had been out on the first night of her holiday in the Greek resort of Kavos when she suffered a fatal head injury after falling several metres.
The officer, who was serving with Surrey Police, had decided to stay out while her colleague went back to their hotel.
Greek authorities believe the fatal injuries she sustained outside a bar are compatible with an ‘accidental fall’.
The Brit was allegedly left bleeding on the street – possibly for hours – before she was found, Greek media reported at the time.
