This 2024 season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference went pretty much like most would’ve expected.
Ferris State and Grand Valley State battled for the conference title, up-and-coming Davenport was in the distance, and Saginaw Valley State was in the middle of the pack, hoping for a slip-up and an opportunity.
SVSU played very well, heavy on the upperclassmen, and cruised past Davenport in stature, nearly making the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
Saginaw Valley State started the 2024 season at 5-1 and had a real chance to make a statement against No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State on Oct. 19.
Unfortunately, after leading 9-3 at halftime, SVSU failed to score in the second half, while allowing GVSU to steal the victory, 16-9.
A month later, still with the potential of at least a share of the conference title and possibly a spot in the playoffs, the Cardinals took top-ranked Ferris State to the wire but ultimately lost 27-24, again failing to score down the stretch. Both teams were scoreless in the final quarter.
A likely deflated SVSU team entered the final week of the regular season clinging to the possibility of getting a bid to the playoffs, but it wasn’t meant to be.
The Cardinals lost to Michigan Tech in the finale 32-28. And guess how it went down – Saginaw Valley State led 28-10 at halftime and went scoreless in the second half, while the Huskies rallied to victory with 22 points in the fourth quarter.
To say the SVSU was its own worst enemy in 2024 would be an understatement.
The Cardinals finished the year 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC standings. They tied for third place with Davenport and Michigan Tech, while Ferris State took the crown at 7-0 and GVSU was second at 6-1.
If SVSU can finish a game in 2025, this could be the year for the Cardinals.
