Indiana high school football Week 2 highlights: Carmel vs Westfield
The Greyhounds are off to a 2-0 start with an impressive win over Class 6A runner-up Westfield in Week 2 of Indiana high school football.
The Class 6A top-ranked host Bulldogs shined in all three phases — offense, defense and special teams — Friday against 5A No. 2 Cathedral, with the defending state champions rolling to a 29-0 win.
Senior quarterback Oscar Frey threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns for Brownsburg (2-0). The defending state champion Bulldogs host Franklin Central next week. They are 8-0 all-time against the Flashes.
Here are three impressions from Friday’s game:
Turning Point: Brownsburg’s defense forced Cathedral to a three-and-out on the Irish’s opening possession, and the Bulldogs’ offense needed just 48 seconds to score its first touchdown. So, if there was a turning point in this one, that was it. However, field position was one of the biggest factors early.
Brownsburg averaged a starting position of its own 45-yard line on its first four possessions, compared to Cathedral starting each of its first four drives on the 20 thanks to touchback kickoffs by senior Will Orlando. The Bulldogs scored on three of their first four possessions, while Cathedral punted on each of theirs.
Play of the Game: Junior receiver Branden Sharpe scored Brownsburg’s first touchdown, taking a short pass from Frye and turning it into a 46-yard reception by outracing Irish defenders. But that wasn’t Sharpe’s best play. His second reception went for 55-yards with Sharpe juking multiple defenders before finally being taken down at the 2. That wasn’t his best play either. That came when Sharpe took the opening play of the third quarter 80 yards, catching a short slant from Frye and outrunning everyone for his second touchdown of the game and fourth on the season.
Top Performer: Fresh off a seven-catch, 159-yard, two-touchdown game in the Bulldogs’ season-opening win over Archbishop Spalding (Md.), the 5-11, 165-pound Sharpe was unstoppable against Cathedral. He had six catches for 146 yards and a touchdown—in the first half alone. Sharpe, who has offers from Indiana and Purdue, finished with eight catches for 237 yards and a pair of scores. — Paul Shepherd
