Labor Day is on Monday, Sept. 1, and while many national restaurant chainsretailers, and grocery stores will remain open, banks, post offices, and the stock market will be closed on the holiday.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, and by 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday on June 28, 1894. The holiday celebrates the “social and economic achievements of American workers,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Is Target open on Labor Day?

If you need to make a quick, last-minute trip to the store to pick up something on Labor Day, Target will be an option for you this year, as the company said its stores will be open. Target store hours vary by location, so customers are encouraged to check online for their store’s specific hours.
