Lakers engaged in trade talks to land 6’5” former Lakers NBA champion guard

The Los Angeles Lakers are still making moves. The Lakers’ free agency signings have been mostly great so far. Still, with the rest of the Western Conference getting even better, the Lakers still have their work cut out for them. The Lakers roster will need to continue its improvement for Luka Doncic and LeBron James to compete for an NBA championship next year.

That’s why, when ClutchPoint’s Brett Siegel reported a Lakers trade rumor that had them pursuing one of their former players, it showed how serious they are about contending now.

“As previously mentioned, the Lakers held conversations with the Grizzlies regarding Caldwell-Pope when Memphis first acquired him.”

The Lakers-KCP connection runs deep. He went from being a solid role player to an NBA champion in a Lakers uniform. KCP was a key piece for the Lakers’ 2020 Championship, and although he left the team soon after, he cemented himself in NBA history with the team.

Now KCP is older and a bit worse, but would still be a key piece if the Lakers were able to trade for him. Before last year’s down season with the Orlando Magic, KCP was a 10-point per game, 40% three-point shooter who played above-average defense.

That’s exactly the type of role player the Lakers need. Imagine the open looks KCP would get with LeBron and Luka finding him on the three-point line.

For now, the possibility of a KCP-Lakers reunion seems unlikely. If the Lakers were able to trade for KCP, why haven’t they done that yet? Still, this Lakers trade rumor shows the type of player that the Lakers are trying to target to strengthen their roster.
