Liverpool close in on deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi – despite Eagles boss Oliver Glasner insisting his side MUST keep him after starring against Aston Villa

Liverpool are getting closer to an agreement to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The two clubs are in negotiations after the Reds had an official bid of £35million turned down on Saturday, with Palace holding out for closer to £40m inclusive of add-ons.

But sources have told Daily Mail Sport that a deal is close and there is an expectation in all parties that Guehi makes the move to Merseyside.

The England international is keen on joining Liverpool.

The Reds’ most recent bid for the England defender was countered by Palace, who demanded £35m plus £5m in add-ons for the wantaway.

Liverpool first proposed stumping up £35m to Palace after the Community Shield and remained interested in brokering a deal for much of the summer window.

Palace asked about taking Gomez on loan on a separate deal, but Liverpool refused.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has remained steadfast in his view that Palace must retain the services of their skipper, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.

‘We need to keep Marc if we are to play a successful season,’ said Glasner. ‘We talked in March about the situation and we have an agreement.

‘There is no replacement so it is clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled. It is necessary for a successful season.

‘If we don’t sell Marc he will accept it because he loves Crystal Palace. We need to keep him. There is no deal.

‘He is out player, under contract, he is not striking. No one forces anyone to sign a deal. The only who decides if Marc stays at palace is the chairman.

‘I like Marc, he is such a professional player and such a nice guy. We have to keep him. We don’t have the right replacement, so for me, it is clear we keep him.’
