Mass shooting that killed Ole Miss football player, wounded 4 others, sourced to weekend pool party

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office now says that the mass shooting that killed an 18-year-old Ole Miss football player and wounded four others in Cordova is suspected to have stemmed from a weekend pool party.

Corey Adams’ family joined SCSO investigators Monday afternoon in a plea to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest in this homicide.

“He was just coming down here to enjoy himself on his day off,” said Adams’ mother, Chantrel Bernhardt. “He didn’t deserve to die. I’m asking for anybody who has any information to help. I can’t get my child. I can’t get him back to see him play at Ole Miss. I can’t get him back to see him play in the NFL.”

The sheriff’s office says gunfire from at least one rifle and one handgun erupted around 10:15 p.m. Saturday in Fern Glade Cove as a pool party was wrapping up.

SCSO says at least 100 people were at the party when the shooting occurred. Investigators found more than 40 shell casings at the scene.

The sheriff’s office also noted that deputies did receive a noise complaint over the party earlier in the day.

SCSO says 18-year-old Corey Adams, of New Orleans, died at the scene.

Four other men with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds arrived at local hospitals before first responders arrived. Three of those four victims have since been released as of Monday afternoon.

The events that led up to the shooting are still unknown. SCSO says this remains an active homicide investigation.

“Somebody heard something. Somebody saw something. We need you to step up,” said SCSO Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner. “Corey was a good man. He didn’t deserve this.”
