NORTH CANTON — The Medina Bees (visited North Canton to take on the Hoover Vikings in Week 2 of the high school football season Friday, Aug. 29.
Medina was coming off a 21-13 win over Stow in Week 1. Hoover defeated Buchtel 30-0 in its season opener.
It was all Hoover in this one Friday, as the Vikings rolled 42-17.
Here’s how the game unfolded through our live updates.
Hoover runs out the clock and defeats Medina 42-17. The Vikings improve to 2-0. Medina falls to 1-1.
Medina’s Landen Cusick caught a 30-yard touchdown pass with 2:32 left to play to stop the running clock. The quarterback for the Bees in the game is not on the roster I have. The extra point by the Bees was good. Hoover leads 42-17.
Hoover leads Medina 42-10 with 5:12 to play. Medina has it first-and-10 at the Hoover 44-yard line. Offensive lineman Tyler Johnson is the player down for the Bees. He is able to limp off the field under his own power.
Hoover has gone to the bench in the fourth quarter with a 42-10 lead. Luke Whitaker is in at quarterback. Hoover leads 42-10 with 9:20 to play in the game. The Vikings just punted. Medina will take over at its own 10-yard line.
Hoover holds a 42-10 lead over Medina going to the fourth quarter. The Vikings have it third-and-5 at the 50-yard line to start the final quarter.
Collins just took off for a 50-yard touchdown scramble on a third-and-2 play on the first drive of the second half for Hoover. It is the second rushing touchdown of the night for Collins. The extra point by David Wadley is good. Wadley is 6-for-6 on extra point attempts tonight. Hoover leads Medina 42-10. Because the deficit is now greater than 30 points, the clock will not stop after each play. We have 9:56 left to play in the third quarter.
Hoover leads Medina 35-10. The Vikings will receive the second half kickoff.
Hoover runs two plays to run out the clock in the first half. Hoover leads 35-10 and will receive the opening kickoff to start the second half.
A second holding call made it first-and-30 for Medina. Brycen Beyer intercepted the Bees on the next pass attempt and returned it to the Hoover 25-yard line. Vikings take over from that spot with a 35-10 lead with 1:18 to play in the second quarter.
Medina has the ball first-and-20 at the Hoover 23-yard line with 1:43 to go in the second quarter. The Bees just took their second timeout and have one left in the half. Hoover leads 35-10.
Carter Lukens returned the Medina kickoff down to the Bee 5-yard line after the field goal. QB John Collins ran it in from 2-yards out on a third down play for the touchdown. The kick is good for Hoover. Vikings lead Medina 35-10 with 3:45 to play in the second quarter.
The Bees convert on a Landon Kusick field goal attempt from 34 yards out. Hoover leads Medina 28-10 with 5:18 to go in the second quarter.
Jack Andes just hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from John Collins to help Hoover answer the Medina touchdown. David Wadley is now 4-for-4 on extra points for Hoover. Vikings lead Medina 28-7 with 8:23 to go in the second quarter.
Jayden Taglicod catches a 16-yard touchdown off a running back pass play by Caleb Sherman for Medina. The extra point is good for the Bees. Medina now trails Hoover 21-7 with 10:20 to play in the second quarter. Big momentum swing for the Bees.
Hoover fumbles on its first play of the drive and Medina scoops it up on the Viking 16-yard line. Medina takes over from that spot. Hoover leads 21-0
Medina tried to run on third-and-6 and Carter Lukens smacked the Bee running back for a 3-yard loss on the play. You could hear the contact all the way over here in the far side press box. That forces a punt. It is downed at the Hoover 20-yard line.
Hoover leads Medina 21-0. River Blomquist was able to convert that third-and-4 with a 6-yard run on a QB scramble. The Bees gained two yards on a run on the last play of the quarter. Medina has it second-and-8 at its own 43-yard line.
The Bees have a key third-and-4 play with 28 seconds left in the first quarter. Medina trails 21-0
The Medina punter tried to sidestep the rush by Hoover and as a result missed kicking the ball after he dropped it for the punt attempt. The ball was recovered by Aidan Kish and returned roughly 20 yards for a Hoover touchdown. The kick is good. Hoover leads 21-0 with 45 seconds left in the first quarter. What a turn of events that was.
Jack Andes catches a 74-yard touchdown pass from John Collins on a third-and-4 play. Andes caught the ball in the open field over the middle, broke two tackles and raced down the right sideline for the score. The extra point was good. Hoover leads Medina 14-0 with 1:48 to go in the first quarter.
The Bees drove down to the Hoover 49-yard line before punting. The ball bounces into the end zone for the second time tonight. It’s a touchback for the Vikings. Hoover takes over at its own 20-yard line with 2:55 to go in the first quarter. Hoover leads Medina 7-0.
One drive. One touchdown for Hoover. QB John Collins ran it in from 1-yard out for a touchdown for the Vikings. An impressive 80-yard opening drive for Hoover. Extra point kick is good. Hoover leads Medina 7-0 with 7:05 left in the first quarter. Chris Carter had a 32-yard reception on a screen pass to set up the short touchdown run by Collins.
Medina picked up one first down but the Hoover defense respondJed quickly. Key play on the drive for the Hoover defense was a sack by David Tully. The Medina punt rolls into the end zone. Hoover will start with the ball at its own 20-yard line.
Medina returned the opening kickoff to its own 19-yard line and the Bees will start from that spot.
Medina wins coins toss
Medina elected to receive the opening kickoff after winning the coin toss. Hoover will get the ball first to start the second half. We are about 25 minutes away from kickoff in North Canton. It is a beautiful night for football. It is currently 65 degrees with a nice breeze. I’ll have live updates right here once we get underway.

OHSAA Week 1 recaps
- MEDINA 21, STOW 13: Quarterback River Blomquist tossed three touchdown passes to lead Medina to victory. Blomquist was 21-of-39 passing for 249 yards with three touchdowns. He also ran 19 times for 51 yards. Kellen Hathaway caught two of the touchdown passes from Blomquist. Hathaway caught five passes for 81 yards. The Medina defense allowed just 268 total yards in Week 1. Defensive lineman Cliff Nicholson had a sack and two tackles for loss for the Bees.
- HOOVER 30, BUCHTEL 0: Quarterback John Collins had a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown to help Hoover shutout Buchtel in Week 1. Collins was 10-of-14 passing for 156 yards with an interception. The Viking defense led by DL Jack Ziarko and LB Carter Lukens limited Buchtel to just eight first downs and 69 yards of total offense.
