ANN ARBOR – Bryce Underwood’s highly anticipated college debut is finally here.

Michigan’s football team kicks off its 2025 season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against New Mexico, and it will be the five-star freshman quarterback to lead the Wolverines’ offense onto the field when it first gets the ball.

While all eyes will be on Underwood, Michigan also will be debuting a handful of new starters on defense. Gone at the defensive tackle position are first-round picks Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham, plus All-American cornerback Will Johnson and 2024 sacks leader Josaiah Stewart. Nevertheless, expectations remain high for Wink Martindale’s unit after ending last season with stout performances against Northwestern, Ohio State and Alabama.

Many experts are expecting the Wolverines to roll Saturday against a Lobos team with a new head coach in Jason Eck and 72 new players on the roster. New Mexico hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 and are a massive road underdog against Michigan.
