Michigan State football game today live updates vs. Western Michigan: Spartans grab early lead

First Quarter

0:00 — The Spartans make quick work of Western Michigan’s offense this time around, with Anelu Lafaele sacking Brady Jones on third-down to force a punt. Aidan Chiles completed his longest throw of the night so far, finding Omari Kelly for 14 yards. Spartans begin the second quarter around midfield.

5:30 — One drive, one touchdown for the Spartans. Michigan State going to the run early with sophomore running back Makhi Frazier getting five carries for 45 yards on the drive. He broke through with a 28-yard run to get Michigan State into the red zone. Fellow sophomore back Brandon Tullis finished off the drive, weaving his way for a 12-yard TD, the first of his career. Spartans 7, Broncos 0

11:12 — Western Michigan gets a big pickup on the opening play from scrimmage, with quarterback Brady Jones hitting Georgia State transfer Tailique Williams for 35 yards. The Spartans manage to stifle the Broncos’ running game and force an incompletion on a fourth-down try deep in Michigan State territory. Spartans offense takes over.

15:00 — Michigan State wins the toss and defers to the second half. Western Michigan will start things off at Spartan Stadium.

EAST LANSING — The long wait for the Michigan State football season to begin is over as the Spartans host in-state opponent Western Michigan for their season opener Friday night.

Michigan State enters coming off a 5-7 season under first-year coach Jonathan Smith and hopes to get back to bowl eligibility in his second season.

Returning dynamic quarterback Aidan Chiles will lead the way for the Spartans’ offense, hoping to improve upon their 123rd ranked unit from last season.

Western Michigan comes into the 2025 season after coach Lance Taylor and staff’s first bowl berth following a 6-6 campaign.

The Broncos aren’t returning too much offensive production, but junior running back Jalen Buckley is an explosive option who has over 1,700 rushing yards in his career.

Michigan State owns a 15-2 advantage in the all-time series against Western Michigan. The last meeting between the programs was a 35-13 win for the Spartans at home in 2022.
