Nottingham Forest go toe-to-toe with European rivals for Man City star James McAtee – but will need to pay more than £25m for England U21 hero

Borusisa Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Nottingham Forest remain at the front of the race for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

The 22-year old, fresh from leading England U21s to European Championship victory, is ready for a fresh challenge away from City as he seeks more regular game time.

Mail Sport reported in December how a raft of clubs have been showing interest in England and Italy but the strongest interest has been from Germany and the Bundesliga still seems a likely destination.

Suitors believe McAtee can still be prised away for around £25million though City value him more highly.

He has one year left on contract and scored seven goals in 27 City appearances last season, he also has experience from playing on loan at Sheffield United for two seasons, in the Championship and Premier League.

Fiorentina, Roma and Atalanta are among his admirers in Serie A and other Premier League sides have enquired but Dortmund, Frankfurt and Forest have maintained contact from the start since it became apparent Pep Guardiola would consider allowing McAtee to leave.

McAtee has made 48 Premier League appearances altogether and six in the Champions League. He got two assists and a goal to help inspire England U21s to their Euros triumph last month.
