The Roosevelt Lakers had to expect a learning curve when jumping from the NAIA level to NCAA Division II, while also landing in one of the toughest football conferences in the nation.
And no one could’ve blamed the squad if its debut season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wasn’t as statistically stellar as the few years prior.
Despite expectations and predictions, the team did pick up its first conference victory and did not finish last in the eight-team standings.
Sure, Roosevelt struggled and opened the season with five consecutive losses, but the Lakers held their own in most of those games and were within a score or two each week from a possible 5-1 start, including their first Division II and GLIAC win against Northern Michigan on Oct. 19.
A new head coach, William McKeon, and a year under their belts could have the Lakers ready to rise in the ranks of the tough GLIAC, which includes the reigning Division II national champion, Ferris State.
In their debut season last year, the Lakers were 1-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play, finishing one spot ahead of winless Northern Michigan.
Roosevelt opens its sophomore campaign Sept. 6 at home at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Illinois, against Quincy. The Lakers will play five home games and five games on the road.
