  • Monterey Car week takes place in August every year in Monterey, California.
  • This car event is home to one of the most expensive car auctions in the world.
  • Not everything sold at auction at Monterey has a jaw-dropping price.

Monterey Car Week is an event where some of the most expensive vehicles in the world are sold at auction.

This year, the final Ferrari SP3 Daytona to be built was sold for $26 million. Sales like this are what everyone pays attention to at Monterey Car Week, but how about the cheapest cars sold during these auctions? Surprisingly, there are cars sold at this auction that regular people might be able to afford, but they aren’t your normal grocery getters or mall crawlers.

Harrington Cobra Junior Car – $21,000

This small vehicle is called a junior car. These types of vehicles are scaled down versions of the original model and are made for children to drive. Not only is the body of the vehicle scaled down, but the engine and price are downsized as well.

This car is a smaller version of a Shelby Cobra. It’s powered by a 1-cylinder engine and can reach a top speed of 40 mph.

F-Racer Junior – $24,000

There was a Ferrari F40 that sold at Monterey for $3.8 million. If that happens to be out of your budget, then this F-Racer Junior could save you some money. While it can’t reach 200 mph, it’s still a cool way to pay homage to the legendary Ferrari. If you take the time to think about it, this faux F40 may be driven for more miles than the real one.

1974 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV – $28,000

This Alfa Romeo may be small, but at least it’s a real car. This GTV is performance oriented as it features a full roll cage, a Moroso ignition and an ATL safety fuel cell. The Italian flag livery adds character and styling to the car.

Harrington Spyder Junior Car – $31,200

This Spyder Junior Car from Harrington is modeled after the Shelby 289 Cobra. The bright red paint is sure to draw attention as you take this thing for a spin.

Harrington Daytona Junior Car – $32,400

Another junior car from Harrington, this one being modeled after the Ferrari GTB/4 365 Daytona Spider. The 365 Daytona also inspired the latest V12 Ferrari to be released, the 12Cilindri.

Porsche 936 Junior – $33,600

Unlike the other junior cars sold at Monterey, this Porsche 936 Junior was actually built by the manufacturer that made the real car. This junior vehicle was made to honor the original 936 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1981. Only 100 of these models were built.

1964 Fiat 500 D Trasformabile – $33,600

This Fiat may be the same size as a junior car, but it’s the real deal. Based on the 500 Nuova, this car features an extended roof that can be removed, similar to a soft targa top. The vehicle has been completely restored, and really shows off the Verde Acquamarina paint.

1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider by Pinin Farina – $39,200

This classic Alfa Romeo was designed by the legendary Italian coachbuilder Pinin Farina. The original owner of the vehicle primarily used it as a race car and the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) confirmed it has three completed racing logbooks.

1965 Volvo PV 544 Sport – $44,800

This Volvo was the first attempt at a unibody chassis by the Swedish automaker. Due to material shortages during WWII, Volvo needed to make a smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicle and that led to the creation of the PV 544. The sport trim level added a slightly bigger engine and more power along with its hunter green paint and interior.

1964 Studebaker Avanti R2 – $47,600

The stylist who hired the team to build this vehicle was none other than Raymond Loewy, the creator of the redesigned Coca-Cola bottle in 1955. This Avanti has a V8 engine with an R2 supercharger, power steering, a silent muffler, a floor-shift automatic transmission and Twin-Traction differential. Only 809 examples were built for the final model year in 1964 and only 281 were supercharged R2 variants.
