Labor Day protests begin in DC with nationwide rallies planned
Thousands rally in Washington, D.C. to protest union-busting and inequality ahead of Labor Day weekend.
Labor Day protests on Monday, Sept. 1, will be happening across the country as workers rally for the ‘Workers Over Billionaires’ Day of Action.
Thousands of people are expected to participate in planned protests taking place nationwide, according to USA TODAY’s previous reporting. Larger events are anticipated in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, although it isn’t currently a flagship event.
The protests are designed to build on the momentum of other large demonstrations against President Donald Trump and the billionaires who support him. Labor organizations and advocacy groups, including the AFL-CIO and May Day Strong, will lead the protests.
From Alaska to Hawaii, and from Florida to Maine, here are some locations where protests are scheduled to take place, along with information on how to find one near you.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment on the protests. Instead, it released a statement from Vice President JD Vance about the Democrats’ decision not to support the GOP tax and spending bill. Additionally, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided a statement regarding Labor Day.
“We finally have a President who fights and delivers for the American worker every single day. President Trump believes that American workers are the heart and soul of our economy and our national identity, which is why he’s championed an agenda that puts them first always,” Leavitt said.
But, many Americans don’t see Trump’s actions the same way, said Saqib Bhatti, executive director of Action Center on Race and the Economy, a group focused on racial and economic activism.
Protests occurring in front of Trump Towers
Similar to the “No Kings Day” protests, Trump is the central figure at the center of the “Workers over Billionaires” protests. So, it’s no surprise that two of the hundreds of demonstrations planned for Labor Day will be located at or near the Trump Towers in New York and Chicago.
In New York, restaurant workers, wage advocates and members of the community “will expose Trump’s hypocrisy in attacking working people and call on NY legislators to respond with real solutions,” Saru Jayaraman, president of One Fair Wage, stated in a press release emailed to USA TODAY.
Both protests have been titled the “Trump Tower TACO rally” and will be held in the following locations:
