Beware of QR code scams during holiday season, Better Business Bureau says :: WRAL.com

Scammers are finding new techniques to steal your information this holiday season.

One of the new methods scammers are using is slipping QR codes into unassuming packages or free gifts to steal your personal information.

“Once you scan that QR code, it prompts you to enter information for phishing scams or even download malware on your device,” said Nick Hill with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Hill added that the BBB is unsure how much information can be stolen from the QR codes, but said it can range from passwords to your accounts to even your social security number.

Hill said there are steps residents can take to avoid those scams, such as checking the link connected to the QR code.

“First, look at the beginning of the URL, that web address, and make sure it starts with ‘HTTPS,’” Hill said. “That ‘S’ stands for ‘Secure.’ That’s going to be a good sign that QR code [and] that link is going to be safe.”

In addition to scammers, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office is also warning residents against porch pirates during the holiday season.

“If you’re expecting a large package, I would either make arrangements to be there upon delivery,” said Cameron Lilyquist with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. “I would utilize all the shipping apps to know where your package is in transit.”

Lilyquist also recommends asking a neighbor to accept the package if you can’t be there.

Anyone who thinks they may have been scammed during the holidays can use the BBB’s scammer tracker here.
