According to Pete Nakos of On3 on Thursday afternoon, the Michigan Wolverines — as well as Duke and Indiana — have made contact with former Florida Atlantic running back CJ Campbell, who is in the transfer portal.
And on the same day, 247Sports’ Allen Trieu reported that Michigan was among the many schools to reach out to former Northwestern offensive lineman Josh Thompson. Tennessee, Michigan State, LSU, Ohio State, Missouri, Florida State, South Carolina and Auburn have all also contacted Thompson.
A member of the 2021 class, Campbell actually signed with Florida State coming out of high school. He played in Tallahassee for three years before transferring to FAU, where he starred this past season. In 2024, the 5-foot-10, 202-pounder compiled 165 carries for 844 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 40 catches for 466 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Funny enough, the Seminoles appear to have also extended him an offer out of the portal, so that would be an interesting homecoming should Campbell go back to FSU.
With Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards off to the NFL, it makes sense for Sherrone Moore and company to eye a running back in the portal this offseason to pair up with Ben Hall and Jordan Marshall in 2025.
Thompson was also a member of the 2021 class. He’s a Michigan native and was the eighth-highest ranked guard in the Big Ten and SEC combined, per Pro Football Focus, according to Trieu. He started 21 games during his time at Northwestern and was an An All-Big Ten Honorable Mention this season. In addition to his experience on the interior, he also played 11 games at right tackle in 2023.
Thompson very well could follow the same path that Josh Priebe did last offseason and develop into a stellar offensive lineman in Evanston, just to transfer to his hometown school. And to steal him away from other elite programs — especially Ohio State, which is in desperate need of help along the offensive line — would make it even sweeter.
The portal officially opens on Monday, so stay locked in with Maize n Brew as transfer news comes in throughout the rest of December.
