As of 10 p.m. Friday, Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy has not been fired.
After rumors of his firing surfaced earlier Friday evening, multiple outlets reported that Gundy and members of Oklahoma State’s administration were working on getting the details in a new contract “ironed out.”
At 9:45 p.m., Scott Wright of The Oklahoman reported that discussions are headed in a positive direction towards a resolution to keep Gundy coaching Oklahoma State.
While no action was taken by the Board of Regents this morning in their two-hour special meeting, Gundy was presented with an amended contract, which includes a pay cut, as first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN. Once presented with the new contract, Gundy had a deadline of 5 p.m. and Gundy asked to have more time to think about his options, per multiple reports.
All of this stems from a special board meeting which took place this morning, which was for the purpose of “evaluation/assessment and other information relevant to the employment of Oklahoma State University football staff.” Out of the meeting, board chairman Jimmy Harrel told media members that they had a “plan.”
The meeting was put on the Board of Regents calendar on Wednesday, the same day offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo were fired following the Cowboys’ 3-9 2024 football season.
Gundy, who just completed his 20th season as head coach at Oklahoma State, earns a total annual compensation of over $7.7 million. His buyout is just over $25.3 million.
Following the 2024 season, Gundy has a head coaching record of 169-88 and has won more than 100 Big 12 games. He is a three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year (2010, 2021, 2023), also winning the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award and being named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 2011. This is just the second losing season of his career.
