Tucson-area business steps up to help families with unfinished pools

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – After hiring the same company to build pools at their homes, some southern Arizona families were left with nothing more than a hole in the ground.

The projects also left holes in the families’ pockets after they spent thousands of dollars.

13 News spoke to two homeowners in Vail about their experience.

Christian Pagan is a father to four daughters.

He hired a company to help build the pool of his dreams. Several months into the project, the company stopped construction, leaving a giant hole in his backyard. The company billed him $30,000, which he said he still hasn’t gotten back yet.

“It looked like a whole war zone,” Pagan said. “It looked like a crater in the back of my yard.”

One of Pagan’s daughters fell into the hole because the area was not secured by the previous company. It left her with a huge gash on her head.

“It was to the point that we felt like we were trapped inside of a prison because my kids couldn’t come back out here and it wasn’t safe,” Pagan said.

Just one street away, Heath Vinyard was going through a similar problem with the same company.

They each had a hole several feet deep in their backyards, and each of them was out $30,000.

“They actually showed up to do the excavation, and they dug the hole and pretty much, the entire yard was one big hole,” Vinyard said. “They finished early the next day and never came back.”

While Pagan and Vinyard tried to look for another company to finish the work or explore other options, they either got turned down or were asked to pay more than the original project.

Pagan got in contact with local business owner, Richard Main, who not only offered to finish the projects but also work with their budgets.

“I got into his shoes because I have kids, and I was like, ‘what a bad situation to be in,’” Main told 13 News. “So, I did everything I could to help him through the whole process.”

Pagan referred Main to his neighbor and within three to four months, the families finally got their dream pools.

Main told 13 News the reason for the successful projects and referrals is because he values the relationships with his customers, and he thinks actions speak louder than words.

“Your actions show who you are,” Main said. “Money is the word currency. It flows, comes and goes, but the relationship with my customers means the whole world, the whole universe to me.”

Pagan and Vinyard have enjoyed their new pools since September 2024. They tell 13 News that they hope people can learn that even in the face of difficulty, being compassionate goes a long way.
